Kriolu as a Living Language — New Directions in Cabo Verdean Linguistic

Kriolu, the creole language spoken across the nine islands of Cabo Verde and throughout the diaspora, is far more than a means of communication — it is a living archive of history, identity, and cultural resilience. Recent research emerging from CVCAR explores the regional variations of Kriolu, from the Sotavento islands to the Barlavento, examining how geography, migration, and social change have shaped its evolution. Our researchers are also investigating the role of Kriolu in diaspora communities in the United States, Portugal, and the Netherlands, asking how language sustains belonging across borders. This ongoing work contributes to a broader understanding of creole linguistics and the unique position of Cabo Verde at the crossroads of Africa, Europe, and the Atlantic world.
